How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Rap The Ways
While training with the US Women's National Team at LiveStrong Park in Kansas City, Hope Solo was cornered and subsequently serenaded by Sporting KC striker CJ Sapong. It's hard to watch since he struggles to find his flow in the beginning, but with some encouragement from the crowd and Ms. Solo herself, he finally manages to profess his love to her via rap. He ends his rap by asking for a hug but receives a hug with a bonus kiss. Well played, sir.
If You Spray It, They Will Come
David Beckham is a good sport. His visit to the Ellen Degeneres Show found him playing puppet to Ellen's puppeteer as he poses as a Target employee named Ricky trying to entice shoppers to buy his-er, David Beckham's cologne. One lucky shopper was even encouraged to steal it! David Beckham's no actor, but who can be convincing with Ellen barking orders in their ear? Dance, monkey, dance.
Pirates Vs. Receding Hair Lines
Last year for FIFA 11 we were treated to the throwdown between Steve Nash and Landon Donovan. This year they are back in action, but not against each other. Steve Nash faced off with Hope Solo while Landon Donovan took on Tim Lincecum. Hope Solo is featured in our first video of the day, so it seems appropriate to go with the Landon Donovan & Tim Lincecum matchup. Plus, Donovan is better at trash-talking than Hope. Sorry, Hope. Look at it this way: Donovan isn't being serenaded by strapping young strikers like you.

Nando Watch: Champions League (Bayer Leverkusen)
Nando Watch is a weekly post chronicling Fernando Torres' performance during his second season at Chelsea. Considering his one goal debut season for the club, the only way he can go during this season is up. Today was Chelsea's first match in their Champions League campaign and Nando & Co. kicked it off with a bang.

Chelsea started off their Champions League campaign with a bang yesterday as they pulled out a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. For a squad that is constantly accused of being too old, Chelsea controlled the pace of the match and that pace was set to light speed.
Before the match it was rumored that Fernando Torres would be benched due to his recent questionable performances, and reports that he colored his veteran teammates in an unflattering light probably didn't help his case. Despite reports to the contrary, Fernando Torres played the entire match. Again, Nando turned in another scoreless performance, but he certainly stated his case for Andres Villas-Boas. Not only did Fernando assist in both goals scored, the second assist was a result of unselfishly giving up a chance to score by passing to his fellow Spainard Juan Mata, who easily slotted the ball into the net.
It's easy to get caught in the fact that Nando has only scored one goal during his time at Chelsea. The job of the striker is to put the goals in the net after all. However, Fernando's performance yesterday showed flashes of the brilliance he's been lacking for some time. If he keeps playing that way, he'll be back to his goal scoring ways in no time. He doesn't seem to be too concerned since he gave up a chance for his teammate to score, so no one else should be too concerned either.

Kayla's Salute: Manchester United
I love football as much as the next guy, but at the base level, I'm still a woman. I appreciate the after-game shirt exchange just as much as the game itself. Kayla's salute is a recurring piece spotlighting the best footballers that also happen to be the best looking. With the first few weeks behind us in the EPL season, one season has been invincible force that has annihilated the competition. Have we really come to expect anything else from Sir Ferg & Co.? Of course not.

No matter your opinion of the squad, you have to respect Manchester United. Always a tough opponent no matter who they play, Manchester United racked up their 19th league title for the 2010-2011 season and are well on their way to another with their amazing start to this 2011-2012 season. With all wins thus far, Manchester United's most recent outing served Bolton Wanderers with an embarassing 5-0 loss, as a result of a brace from Chicharito and a hat trick from Wayne "Must Be the Hair Plugs" Rooney.
If they keep this up, Manchester United are well on their way to their 20th title, the 12th for Sir Alex Ferguson. There's plenty of season left to play so it's anyone's title (well, realistically, it's up for grabs for four clubs but that's neither here nor there).
Although the whole "gimmick" of this weekly post is saluting outstanding players that are good looking, one might argue this cannot be said about all of Manchester United players. But at the very least, Wazza cleans up pretty nice, no?

Nando Watch: Week 3 (Sunderland)

Oh, Fernando. Another scoreless week has passed you by. With Didier Drogba out with a nasty injury and Juan Mata selected as the starting striker over Torres, Torres came on in the 73rd minute to replace Mata and turned in another scoreless performance for Chelsea. No worries. John Terry and Daniel Sturridge turned in the goals for this match to bring about a win for The Blues.
Another goalless appearance for Fernando Torres could spell trouble for the striker, as Andres Villas-Boas has clearly stated the Spanish striker will have to fight for his position on the squad. Also being snubbed by Spain's head coach Vincente del Bosque during the international break sends a clear message.
No one loses their talent or skill on the pitch. Torres is suffering a lack of confidence that has been evident through his time at Liverpool, the 2010 World Cup, and since his signing at Chelsea. Torres has struggled to prove his worth for The Blues, but it is early in the season still. We can only hope Torres will receive some sort of confidence boost before AVB decides he is not a valuable asset to the team after all.
Next week is another match and another chance to rack up a goal or two.

Anyone who has been closely watching the USMNT since the beginning of the Klinsmann reign has surely noticed Brek Shea, and not because of his above-average stature. The tow-headed midfielder has made the best of his national team call ups by not only assisting in the only goal scored so far in the Klinsmann era but by also remaining one of the few consistent players in the three Klinsmann matches thus far. Plenty of good and bad things have been said of the form of the USMNT under the new German coach, but all good things have been said about this 21-year-old midfielder who has another passion outside of his chosen career. Brek Shea first began painting while at a friend's house and has since gone on to raise a nice chunk of change for the FC Dallas Foundation, which focuses on helping disadvantaged children and giving a leg up to future student athletes, among other things. The video below is of Shea explaining his passion while showing some of his work and also shows clips of the auction where he managed to raise money of the foundation.
And for all that are interested, the lovely painting he did featuring the FC Dallas logo will be available for auction from October 1-14 here.

Apologies for the Break

We've been gone for awhile. We realize a very small handful of people follow this (and we do mean small), but we still feel the need to apologize for the lack of posts as late.
Unlike some of the wonderful footy blogs on the net, we cannot devote the amount of time and attention necessary to really bring great coverage and updates. A full-time job and a full-time life for both of us make it very difficult to devote the necessary time to keep up with the news and goings-on in the footy world. But we try our best. That's all we can do for the time being.
We do this because we love the beautiful game and the wonderful players that participate in it. For anyone that does pay any attention to this, we do ask for your patience when we do take breaks like this. We could easily pump out filler posts to keep the blog consistently updated on days we are not able to really sit down and focus on the work, but we feel it would not be right. We focus more on quality than quantity.
We only ask that you bear with us. We know you understand the time it takes to devote to a full-time job, a full-time life, and a full-time relationship (and being a full-time student for me). We will continue to bring the best of our coverage and thoughts on the footy world, because it is our shared passion and what keeps us sane some days. Please stay tuned!

I know, I know. I'm a little late on this and it's been a while since I've posted "Kissing The Badge". But I'm here now to make up for lost time! Back on August 20th, Robbie Keane made his debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy. And, in the 21st minute, he scored this absolutely fabulous goal. Schooling the keeper was impressive enough, but to follow it with a celebration of that quality only makes it sweeter.
Watch in awe as Keane clowns the keep and then does a nice cartwheel-somersault-air pistol combo in celebration.
Maybe I'll do that celebration the next time I score a goal in Sunday League. =)

Some people grow up knowing exactly what they want out of live. Romelu Lukaku is one of those people. What exactly does Lukaku want, you ask? He wants to play for Chelsea.
Mission accomplished.
Romelu Lukaku was signed with Chelsea on August 18th, and for him, it won't be his first time stepping into Stamford Bridge. The video below is Lukaku as a schoolboy, visiting the stadium on a school trip. At one point in the video, his teacher encourages him to stop dreaming, but Lukaku promises he'll be on the first time squad one day. And now he is.

Nando Watch: Week 1 & 2 (Stoke City & West Bromwich Albion)

The opening weekend for Chelsea didn't necessarily play out like the squad had hoped. A 0-0 draw with Stoke meant the end of a nine year streak of winning their opening season matches for Chelsea. However, it did mean a great performance from Fernando Torres. In fact, it's been his best performance since he became a blue, despite the fact that he did not score. Not bad for a guy who was rumored to miss out due to a concussion. Nando spearheaded a motivated team that created chances and took shots, but was denied by the great saves by Stoke's Asmir Begovic and also the referee. Torres and Frank Lampard were taken down in the box without penalties being awarded.
Week 2 for Chelsea fared a bit better for the blues. It was another scoreless week for Nando, but the Blues managed their first win of the season for their first match at home. Chelsea looked weak in the first half after West Brom claimed an early lead five minutes into the match. Torres turned in another notable performance despite the inability to put any goals on the board, which was done by Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka in the second half, when the Blues began showing signs of life. A 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge puts Chelsea on the right track, and Nando's performance puts him on the track of making up for lost time.

It was recently announced that NBC and MLS had signed a three deal that gave NBC the broadcasting rights to 45 MLS games and 4 USMNT games each season. This deal does not kick in until March of next year, but it seems NBC is eager to spread the word. The video below aired last night during an American football game between the Cowboys and Chargers for the preseason. Let's hope NBC airs the games as a reasonable times for our east coast counter parts. A 8pm match is a-okay with us, but I'm sure the east coasters do not appreciate the 11pm match time. But this is nothing NBC has control over and this can easily spiral into a debate fit for a Spotlight post. Anyways, check out the video below.

Needless to say, we've been slacking a bit this week at The Captain's Armblog, but I promise you, this video will make up for all of it.
Any time these two teams meet, they always manage to put on a show. Take that as good and bad. Yesterday Barcelona and Real Madrid competed in the second leg of the Supercopa, seeing Barcelona pull out a 3-2 win to take home the cup. Clasicos are always tense and intense, but this one exploded in volcanic anger that saw Mesut Ozil sent off and Jose Mourinho sneaking up on a Barca coach to hook him in the eye with his finger. Childish, childish tactics, Jose. We really didn't expect better from you.
The scuffle broke out as a result of a nasty tackle on Cesc Fabregas courtesy of Marcelo, who was immediately sent off for the offending move. Real Madrid players clearly thought that Fabregas was feigning injury to convince the ref to draw the card, but as you see from the footage and because Fabregas hobbled out of the dressing room to meet the press with an ice pack pressed to his knee, there is no acting here.

The Morning After: USA vs. Mexico Friendly
The Morning After is a recurring piece highlighting matches the morning after or whenever we get around to posting it. This edition of Morning After focuses on the International Friendly between the United States and Mexico.

Last night was the United States' first match with Jurgen Klinsmann at the helm, and it could have gone better. That being said, it could have gone a lot worse. In the wake of the 1 - 1 draw with Mexico the questions and assumptions have all been flying around the internet from cognitive critics and serious journalists, and through word of mouth from random fans and observers. There will no doubt be talk about the questionable calls and somewhat foul play, as well as nitpicking the lineups (of the USA in particular). People will undoubtedly say "they should have done this" or "they shouldn't have done that" but what's done is done. At least for fans of the USA, they can take solace in the fact that this was not a 4 - 2 loss.
The US came out looking energized but seemed to lose their stride in the 17th minute when Oribe Peralta (AKA Gumby) managed to wrap his leg around Michael Bradley in a set piece and put the ball in the goal. For the rest of the half, the game was dominated by the Mexicans. It also didn't help that the US failed to chalk up a shot on goal during the first half. That first shot on goal happened for the US in the 56th minute when Carlos Bocanegra managed a header from a Landon Donovan corner kick. The US managed to wake up some after the close goal, but the calvary arrived in the form of the young guns: Juan Agudelo, Robbie Rogers, and Brek Shea.
Agudelo and Shea both subbed in the match in the 59th minute and immediately shifted the momentum in the US's favor. Robbie Rogers solidified the change when he came on for Michael Bradley in the 71st minute, only to score on a cross set up by Brek Shea in the 73rd, which was also Rogers' first touch of the match. The US controlled the game until the end, so much so that Mexico resulted to desperate measures to prevent more goals from the US team. The pinnacle of the desperation on Mexico's behalf came in the 86th minute, when Robbie Rogers broke away from the pack after accepting an excellent cross from Juan Agudelo and was pulled to the ground by Gerardo Torrado. The general consensus in this instance is that the offending player is shown a straight red, since Rogers had cleared the last defender and Torrado tackled him from behind. Unfortunately Torrado was only shown a yellowcard and play continued.
Regardless of the result and regardless of the lack of some of the usual suspects of the US lineup, Klinsmann has already made a difference in his 10 days with the US leading up to the match. Compared to the squad playing in the Gold Cup final six weeks ago, we saw a new team on the field in Philadelphia last night. This was a team that was a conceivable threat to a Mexico side that was only missing Chicharito, and the US side were a mixture of players who consistently make the roster, players who haven't been on the roster in awhile, and players who are still trying to cut their teeth on the international level. What's more is that the US players who were the biggest threat were the young guns. And that's a good sign. Because with the end of an era of players like Dempsey, Donovan, Cherundolo, and Bocanegra on the horizon, we can rest a little easier knowing we have players who can only be stopped by a defender grabbing their jersey and pulling them to the ground.

The first is called "Victory", and those of you who were old enough to remember Italia 90 will remember this awesomely bad clip of the US National team rapping and playing beach footy while also reminding you not to do drugs and stay in school. OJ Simpson makes a cameo in said video too. I think if he had listened to the advice of the US Boys, he would not have gotten into so much trouble! Eh?

Our second video is something a little more recent. It's by Texan Rapper who goes by the name of Deuce. Better known as Clinton Drew Dempsey, or just Clint. The notable thing about this video, especially when compared to the first one, is that this rap is actually very, very good. Dempsey obviously has the chops. It's just a shame that we haven't heard more of his mic skills over the years. We'll just have to settle for him tearing it up on the pitch instead!

Kayla's Salute: Stuart Holden of Bolton Wanderers
I love football as much as the next guy, but at the base level, I'm still a woman. I appreciate the after-game shirt exchange just as much as the game itself. Kayla's salute is a recurring piece spotlighting the best footballers that also happen to be the best looking. With the beginning of the EPL this weekend, there's also another return we are eagerly anticipating at The Captain's Armblog. The return of Stuart Holden of Bolton Wanderers.

If anyone knows about the ups and downs in life, it's Stuart Holden. Since he began playing professionally in 2005, Stuart Holden has suffered four major injuries. The first came in 2005 while he was with English side Sunderland. Holden was attacked outside of a bar in Newcastle. Suffering a fractured eye socket, the injury put him out of training for two months. Once he returned to Sunderland for training, he suffered an ankle injury that put him out for the rest of the season. Holden left the club without any playing time for the first team.
Holden then moved to the MLS and signed the Houston Dynamo, enjoying a successful injury-free tenure with the club from 2006-2009 until he signed with the Bolton Wanderers in 2010.
Since his time with Bolton, Holden has suffered two injuries in two years. Not long after signing with Bolton he was injured in a challenge with Nigel de Jong as he played for the US Men's National Team in a friendly against the Netherlands. Holden was ruled out for six weeks with a fractured leg, at a time when Bolton were 2 points away from relegation and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was only a couple of months. A year later brought Holden's most recent injury. In a match against Manchester United in March, Holden took Jonny Evans' studs in his knee, resulting in a gash that required 26 stitches. Ultimately Holden was ruled out for six months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Another crushing injury for the midfielder and another death wish from me on a player that brought about the injury by initiating a dirty tackle.
On August 1st, Holden's 26th birthday, Holden returned to training for the first time since he's injury. Being able to kick around the ball and run on the grass was "the best birthday present" for him and was another step closer to his return to first team action.
In the time Stuart Holden played with Bolton during the 2010-2011 EPL season, he propelled the team the 7th place in the standings and a FA Cup semi-final. After his injury, Bolton slipped to 14th place at the end of the season. We can only hope this year Holden can go the whole season in tip top shape and help Bolton make a great run of the season.The remarkable thing about Stuart Holden is that he's managed to come back stronger from each and every injury he's endured in the past six years. Injuries such as these have easily set back many players in the past, stunting their growth in their career. His enthusiastic personality and a "never say die" mantra have propelled him to enjoy a notable career despite the numerous injuries.
Keep up the hard work, Mr. Holden. We are all eagerly awaiting your return.
